Reader Response to Cut by Patricia McCormick
Back cover reads:
Callie cuts herself. NEver too deep, never enough to die. But enough to feel the pain. Enough to feel the scream insisde. Now she's at Sea Pines, a "residential treatment facility" filled with girls struggling with problems of their own. Callie doesn't want to have anything to do with them. She doesn't want to have anything to do with anyone. She won't even speak. But Callie can only stay silent for so long...
My Rxn.
Wow. Callie is speaking to us like we're her counselor. In fact, i have the distinct feeling that she's writing this down as she goes through the healing process. Interesting subject matter... something i knew very little about. The book really smacks of Girl, Interrupted. Word Nerd Seal of Approval, you betcha.
one particular gem i liked:
"Then I placed the blade next to the skin on my palm. A tingle arced across my scalp. The floor tipped up at me and my body spiraled away. Then I was on the ceiling looking down, waiting to see what would happen next. What happened next was that a perfect, straight line of blood bloomed from under the edge of the blade. The line grew into a long, fat bubble, a lush crimson bubble that got bigger and bigger. I watched from above, waiting to see how big it would get before it burst. When it did, I felt awesome. Satisfied, finally. Then exhausted" (3).
Wow.
Unfortunately, McCormick doesn't return to this type of description for the rest of the story... I think she'd have something much more powerful on her hands if she did. yay!
