Reader Response to The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin
Back Cover Reads:
"A bizarre chain of events begins when 16 unlikely people gather for the reading of Samuel W. Westing's will. And though no one knows why the eccentric, game-loving millionaire has chosen a virtual stranger--and a possible murderer--to inherit his vast fortune, one thing's for sure: Sam Westing may be dead... but that won't stop him from playing one last game!"
my reply:
a bit of a trifle. Kind of boring, actually. I mean, there was wonder and some mystery, but it didn't really keep me going, and it's only 216 pages! i could have read it in 2 days... instead, it took me a week! I do like the way raskin developed her characters, though. I really don't like it, though. It's justifiable for maybe 6-9th graders... but I'm rather put off by it. I wouldn't use it in my classroom, though... there's better out there.
Donkey Quoties-
"Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me, she had chanted as a child. Words did hurt, but she was no longer a child" (44).
"Traveling mimosa, my future son-in-law says; he's a doctor, you know" (52). Nice little clue there about denton. He has no idea what he's talking about. mimosa: a mixed drink consisting of champagne and orange juice.
"Maybe the murderer injected bee venom into his veins" (105). I ALWAYS say bee venom! It's like this thing i invented! what else would you call it? bee poison? NO! It's bee venom! heh!
