Reader Response to The Secret School by AVI
Back cover reads:
"More than anything, Ida Bidson wants to become a teacher. To do that, she must finish eighth grade, then go on to high school. But her dream falters when the one-room school in her remote Colorado town shuts down. Her only hope is to keep the school open without anyone finding out. Yet even a secret school needs a teacher. Ida is only fourteen, so she can't do the job... Or can she?"
My Rxn:
This is one of the historical fiction novels that my 6th grade class is reading. It's quite the interesting little morsel. It has some great description. It's a nice little bildungsroman story reminiscient of the Little House series. It's cute, but cute doesn't win the Word Nerd Seal of Approval.
It's a great read for this age level. I liked it, but it's not whipping me into an emotional frenzy. There are some awesome examples of personification, though!
One awesome quote:
"If you want to try something new, and you're not scared, means you're not really trying something new" (34).
