Of Mice and Men

Reader Response to Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck

I read it out of an anthology of sorts, so there was no summary anywhere. but this is one of the classics that i wanted to read.

My Rxn:
An interesting little trifle. It's about 2 migrant workers in California. I don't realy know what to say. I wish Steinbeck would have done more with them. George is Lennie's parent figure. Lennie has the mental capacity of an 8 year old, but he's very strong. Lennie often does bad things on accident: kills mice and puppies by handling them too roughly; scares a woman because he wants to pet her dress. we learn a little bit about these two characters, but not enough. i didn't feel as if i had a very close connection with either of them. for most of the story, George acts like a bossy, overbearing, swearing jerk with Lennie. By the end of the story, we realize that he acts this way for Lennie's protection. At the end of the book, George commits an act of mercy that illustrates how deep his affection is for Lennie.

I like steinbeck's writing. I read tortilla flat when i was in high school. There's just something about his style that I enjoy. However, in Of Mice and Men, he could have done a little more with his characters. one upper, it was a really quick read. i had to read it over the weekend... so i read it in spurts. but it's only about 100 pages. could have polished it off in a day!

Classics do not automatically win the Word Nerd Seal of Approval. Sorry!
