Reader Response to Dogsong by Gary Paulsen
Back cover reads:
"Something is bothering Russel Susskit. He hates waking up to the sound of his father's oughing, the smell of diesel oi, the noise of snow machines starting up. Only Oogruk, the shaman who owns the last team of dogs in the village, understands Russel's longing for the old ways and the songs that celebrated them. But Oogruk cannot give Russel the answers he seeks; the old man can only prepare him for what he must do alone. Driven by a strange, powerful dream of a long-ago self and by a burning desire to find his own song, Russel takes Oogruk's dogs on an epic journey of self-discovery that will change his life forever."
My Rxn:
Wow. this is a great one because it focuses on something that i know nothing about: Inuit culture. It's awesome. A great bildungsroman as well! Right up there with Hatchet. The details that Paulsen uses to create the story give him an immense amount of credibility. Another great survival story, and I'd highly recommend it to just about anyone. the protagonist is 14 or 15 i think, but seniors and adults could read this and like it. Word Nerd Seal of Approval for sure!
words for thought:
"It isn't the destination that counts. It is the journey. That is what life is. A journey. Make it the right wayand you will fill it correctly with days. Pay attention to the journey."
