the torn skirt

Reader Response to The Torn Skirt by Rebecca Godfrey

The back cover reads:
"At Mt. Douglas (aka Mt. Drug) High, all the girls have feathered hair, and the sweet scent of Love's Baby Soft overpowers the musk of raw teenage anger, apathy, and desire. Sara is a girl full of fever and longing, a girl looking for something risky, something real. her only possible savlation comes in the willowy form of the mysterious Justine, the outlaw girl in the torn skirt. The search for her will lead Sara on a daring odyssey into an underworld of hookers and johns, junkies and thieves, runaway girls and skater boys, and ultaimately, into a violent tragedy."

My rxn:

Crap. no. this aspires to be crap, but it doesn't quite cut it. it's a very obvious mixture of go ask alice and manstealing for fatgirls, but boring. the ideas are unoriginal, blatantly borrowed, and antithetical to the word creative. i think that girls with mild problems might like this book... but the protagonist's method of dealing with everything is to just runaway. the upside of this book is that it does show consequences throughout most of the story, but not at the end. i won't give away the ending, but i was sorely disappointed.

i think we'll have to make a word nerd award for crap.
