life in the fat lane
Reader Response to Life in the Fat Lane by Cherie Bennett
half.com's synopsis:
Sixteen-year-old Lara, winner of beauty pageants and Homecoming Queen, is distressed and bewildered when she starts gaining weight and becomes a fat girl.
My Rxn:
Hm. an incredibly hurtful story. Being a fat girl myself, i was completely annoyed with the constant slew of stereotypes and insults about fat girls. but it also shows the hardships of a beauty queen... the pressures that girls face from their parents... particularly mothers who wish to live vicariously through their daughters. I really hated the way the narrator talks about Lane bryant, one of my favorite stores. Overall, and excellent read. I've never heard of this Axell-Crowne syndrome thing... but i think i'll investigate. I was kind of disappointed with the ending. Lara grows so much over the course of the novel, i just wish she would end the book not caring what others think of her. great read for any girl in high school. the protagonist is a senior, so 6-8 grade might be a little young... but i think they'd enjoy it as well.
