Reader Response to How I Live Now by Meg Rosoff

Intro
I've read the novel twice now (i re-read it to find all the awesome vocabulary words in it), and if i read it another time just to react to it, i'll go nuts. ok. i originally read the book over Christmas break. It's my favorite so far. The tone and language of the story is just amazing. It's like rats, but better. It's way more contemporary though- because there are no quotation marks until the second part of the book. I think that shows that the first part is a story that Daisy is telling- one that happened in the past. The 2nd part is a story that's being told as it's happening. It's interesting that she did it that way. I've decided to use this novel for my unit plan.

Ok. On monday we received a packet full of resources for short stories and such. and it provided ways to jazz up your reading log. As this is a reading log of sorts, i thought i'd give it a try. One of the options is: "Write a poem using favourite descriptive words or phrases from a novel."

Final Summation:

Plain Daisy
changed
because of Edmond:
14 in England
cigarette
hatchet-hair
sweet.
house is falling down
fat pebbles stone steps
oldy worldy
Aunt Penn
Isaac
Osbert and
Piper- like the fog on little cat feet.
The Calm Before the Storm.
Siege
War
sequestered
deprived
living like people living someone else's life.
Divine intervention
tasted hopeful
desperation rubbed off
surviving in the wild
walked and walked and walked
half a jar of strawberry jam
and a couple of inches of sausage
to last another month
main barn
glowering gray
more bodies
slow progress.
slept
the dreamless sleep
of the dead.
couldn't go on
went on
learned the hard way
lost the will not to eat.
every war has its silver lining
telephone rang
arrived back in New York

6 years

journey
London
life went on.
It was a start.
