and of course, alice reads the first verse backward because she is on the other side of the mirror, or as willy wonka says, "you have to go forward to go back..."... and "strike that, reverse it..." totally applies here. alice has to go backward to go forward in the story... which is going to get TOTALLY confusing, i think... but i'm just at the part where tweedle dee and tweedle dum are telling "The walrus and the carpenter," which, is really hardly anything like the disney version (which i like a little better)anyways... the first verse of the poem is backwards because she is on the opposite side of the mirror, so she holds it up to the mirror to read it.
Above is the way Carroll originally wrote the first verse of jabberwocky, under the title "stanza of anglo-saxon poetry"

i'm having a blast so far... and SHOOT... i have to post my midterm notes... ACK my flipping jumpdrive isnt working... APOX ON THAT CURMUDGEONLY CACOPHONY OF CALIGINOUS CLINKERING CRAP!
anyways.... i'm still reading the book about his life... but it's going pretty well. i only have 7 to go. and out of that pile o crap i took from the slc library about words.... i took most of them back... but i kept anguished english, what's in a word?, made in america, The Stories of English, and Say it My way. I'm trying to read anguished english- it's much like the word detective- so it should be a short read... but i've decided that my next move on the chess board is
Say it My way
"allow me to esplain. no. there is no time. allow me to sum up." -inigo montoya. Any book that starts out like this is bound to pique my curiousity:
"This book is intended to help you in every day speech. if your desire is to write better, find another book"
i laughed so hard! I usually give a book 1 chance (unless i HAVE to read it). that 1 chance depends on the very first sentence. (writers, are you listening to me???) If a book hooks me before, during, or at the end of the first sentence, i will keep reading, no matter HOW INCREDIBLY FLIPPING BORING the rest of the book is (AHEM wilke collins woman in white, and AHEM the professor and the madman?!)
so how bold and daring! a perfect hook... and then it goes on:
On the Seventh Day God Rested
In the beginning was the Word
Still slightly ungrammatical;
God taught six days, but then occurred
The seventh, a sabbatical.
He rang the bell next day, no doubt,
But all his pupils had dropped out.
awippsome! and THEN:
"Start with the relationship between my great-uncle Allie, better known as Mr. Anonymous, and the Hermit Hoar."
teehee! he also has a section on dialects i can't WAIT to digest! mmmm digesting dialects. ok. so i'm crazy because i eat books and love to grade papers and i'm going on an overnight teen leaders rally with my teen leaders club in stevens point... and they're ages 13-17.... *Screams in horror!* oh well... i love the kids... they're awesome... and i get to drive a short bus!!
ok... well that's it for now... i need to go pass out so i rest up for tomorrow.
out!
